If You Build it - He Will Come - The Field of Dreams - Iowa
Last week we were in Iowa. While Lulu worked I drove 600 miles and visited several must see places in the state. We were staying in Iowa City - the home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. It was an important weekend for them - their women's team was playing for the national championship.
My first stop the small town of Dyersville. In 1989 - one of my favorite movies of all time was released - Field of Dreams. It is the story of a man's relationship with his dad - in a baseball setting. It also featured Shoeless Joe Jackson - of the infamous Black Sox Scandal. As I get older - this is one film that turns on the waterworks for me.
The movie was produced in the Iowa cornfield. The main character - Ray - plows his corn under and builds a baseball field. He does not know why - but finds out soon enough - ghosts of the past come to play there.
The field and home are perfectly preserved. There is even baseball equipment left there for anyone to play. while I was there - it was cold - windy - wet - snowy. Still - I loved seeing where certain scenes of the movie took place.
way out past left field - Major League Baseball has build a new major league quality field. It has been used once a year for a real major league game. You were not allowed to go on that field.
